Albert Einstein once described his theory of relativity by saying: "When a man sits with a pretty girl for an hour, it seems like a minute. But let him sit on a hot stove for a minute and it's longer than any hour."

Now comes automotive proof. There is arguably no car on the road today more an illustration of time being relative than the 2011 Aston Martin Rapide. Get anywhere near Aston Martin's first four-door offering in more than 20 years, and time — and your heart rate — speeds up.

The Rapide looks like Aston Martin's DB9 because that's largely what it's based on. The cars share numerous components including a 6.0-liter V-12 engine, good for 470 horsepower and 443 pound-feet of torque; a rear-mounted "Touchtronic 2" six-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters; and various body panels and suspension components.

Aston Martin's philosophy in releasing the Rapide is similar to that of other companies trying to straddle the four-door coupe/sedan line, including Mercedes-Benz and its CLS63 AMG, Maserati's Quattroporte and, most notably, Porsche's Panamera. That is: Build a car that looks and handles like a sports car, yet has the added practicality of a larger trunk and rear seats that you don't have to be a Cirque du Soleil alumnus to access.

The Aston Martin Rapide

Aston Martin Rapide

Aston Martin Rapide

IT'S a sunny Sunday afternoon and you're off to a country pub for a pie and several pints. Naturally you will not drive yourself there and so are cadging a lift. You have two offers: a Ford Galaxy with lots of space for head and legs or the cramped rear seat of a brand new Aston Martin Rapide.

Which do you choose? Only a complete loser would choose the Ford because the pub will be packed and loads of people will see you rock up in one of the world's most sexy four-door cars. You might well fall out of the Rapide in a tangle of arms and legs but you will still have arrived in great style. Anyway, people will simply assume that this isn't the first pub that you've been to today and that you have already got a few jars in the bag.

You can probably guess the identity of the Rapide's mother from looking at it. Yes, it's a stretched Aston Martin DB9. Astons have an extruded aluminium chassis made up of bonded, riveted and bolted together sections so it's extremely straightforward to get a few longer lengths of aluminium and make a longer version of the car. Which is exactly what's been done - in Graz, Austria and not in Aston's Gaydon factory where everything else is made. A bit of a shame this, because I would rather it were built by British workers. Never mind, it's still lovely to look at.

Aston Martin DB9 is UK's favorite car of last 25 years

It's just six years old, but Britons have lived with it long enough to declare the Aston Martin DB9 their favorite car of the past 25 years. Great Britain's drivers were asked to choose their favorite car from a list of 30 rides going back to 1985 and fully ten percent of them chose Aston's middle-child coupe, said to be "synonymous with James Bond" even though he never drove one. Germany rounded out the podium spots with the Volkswagen Golf at number two, and the (Anglo-SaxonGerman) Mini at number three.

Rich Arab Buys TEN Aston Martin One-77s

Aston Martin One-77s
According to a new report a single and obviously incredibly rich buyer in the Middle East has shelled out for not one but ten Aston-Martin One-77 supercars which cost $1.7 million apiece. The unnamed buyer - we're guessing oil sheik - apparently paid a premium to get the cars sent to his desert demesne, bringing the total cost of the cars to $23 million. He is reportedly planning to give one to each member of his immediate family. Sounds like a pretty popular guy. Aston Martin unveiled the car last year and announced that only 77 examples would be made. With a low weight carbon fiber monocoque, the sexy beast's 7.3-liter V12 engine with 750 hp helps it hit a top speed of 220 mph.

Aston-Martin Rapide

Aston-Martin Rapide
The Aston Martin Rapide is the English super car maker’s entrant into the four door high luxury segment market with its unique passenger arrangement and the fact that it has a pair of rear doors. Originally introduced as a concept at the 2006 NAIS in Detroit, a further refined Rapide production concept debuted at the 2009 Geneva Motor Show with a road going version to be released sometime in 2010. The Rapide is powered by Aston’s 6.0 Liter V12 lifted directly from the DB9, and makes 470 HP and 443 lb-ft of torque just like the coupe, not to mention that it will take the $200,000 super sedan from 0 to 60 MPH in just 5.1 seconds and reach a top speed estimated to be around 188 MPH.

Aston Martin in Indian Market

The luxury car segment is driven mostly by exclusivity. Customers buying cars that sometimes cost a couple of crores, look for uniqueness as much as they look for performance and high-end features.

Luxury car makers BMW [ Images ], Audi and Mercedes-Benz make up for most of the luxury car market in India [ Images ]. Indian customers have the moolah to spend and no car maker is ready to leave the opportunity to capitalise on it.

Rumours are on that the luxury car maker Aston Martin based in Britain is all set to foray into the Indian market. Everything is very hushed at the moment and no body is coming on-record to confirm or dismiss these rumours.

It is believed that the planning is still in the most native stages and Aston Martin has not yet decided on the models the company plans to launch in India. The company is also learnt to be in discussion with dealers but no final choice has been made yet.

However, if rumours are to be believed then Aston Martin might enter India with either a SUV (sports utility vehicle) model or a luxury sedan.

The financially strong upper class of India and the good results posted by the existing luxury car makers in the country are the biggest pull for any car manufacturer across the globe.
